Prelude
India and Hinduism has seen many form of saints, some saints have lived only in the forests and rarely appeared before the people. Some kept wandering in various places propagating the Sanadhana Dharmas amidst people and some became muttathipathis and took sainthood even in the early ages and guided people. There are also mutts in vaishnavism wherein sainthood is prescribed only after a person has completed his karmas in their familyhood (e.g. should have got married, blessed with children etc) and they took sanyasam in their old ages.
In all the above forms, there is one common thread i.e. segregating the family life and saint life as it is very difficult to mix both of them and honor the sainthood and family responsibilities. Some have also considered sainthood as one of the route to shun their family responsibilities leaving their respective families in the lurch. In this context, is it possible to fulfill the family responsibilities and yet live a saintlihood? Will it not be a complex task? Can one differentiate the saint life and family life
as watertight compartments and still make it coexist in daily life? Will it not be like a beacon for all those who run a family life and be detached from material things and have saintliness in their daily lives? Is this not the same thing which Lord Krishna advocated in ‘Bagavat Gita’ – Be detached?!!!
Yes.
You are reading this text because Guru Surajananda performed it with ease and lived a life setting an example, infact a rare example among the saints! He bravely confronted all the tides of family life yet set an example of a pure sainthood. He is a Naitika bramhachari (unmarried) and lived with his mother and brother.
This brief
history has references to a book in Tamil ‘Sri Sri Sri Gurumaharaj Gurusurajananda Divya Saritham’ published by Yogalaya Ashram, Neelangarai,
Chennai and some more points added to it based on what I heard from various followers of Guruji. Even today there are celebrity followers to Guruji like Karaikudi Mani, who has even instituted Guruji Memorial awards for upcoming music students through the academy; one may often come across popular carnatic numbers authored by Guruji which were sung by leading and popular carnatic singers like Sri TMT, Sri Maharajapuram Santhanam, Smt Sudha Raghunathan which shows his depth in various arenas of life.
Early Life
Guruji was born as second child after a girl child to Sri.Sethunarayanana rao and Smt. Padmavathi ammal on 12thJune 1938 in Madurai
in Tamilnadu. He was named as Sundararajan by his parents. When he was 3 years old, the family moved to his native town – chinnamanur in Madurai district. After Sundararajan, his parents were blessed with another boy and girl. Sundararajan used to be very active boy in his early childhood. When he was 9 years old, he authored his first song on Sri Guru Raghavendra and sung himself wherein he prayed for blessings of Guru Ragavendra to do pooja for ever, grant him sainthood etc. thereby stunning all people in the family as it is not a subject that a small child will deal with.
Childhood
When sundararajan was in the verge of finishing elementary education, his mother passed away in 1948. In 1950, his father got remarried to Smt. Jayalakshmi to take care of the children. She took care of the children as her own only. In 1952, Sundarajan got introduced to one Sri Krishnaiyar who was the upasaka of Sri Anjaneya and Bagavathi and he taught him the upasana procedures for Anjaneya and Kali Devi. During those days, when he used to do upasanai, his restlessness grew leaps and bounds such that he used to walk to various places without his consciousness. Sometimes, he used to go to burial ground and perform meditation over there. Once he mentioned that ‘if you have a deer as pet, you should have atleast a small garden, but if you have a tiger as pet, you have to go to the forest only and hence I go to forest’
Sundararajan used to involve himself in various pujas. Once he was put into Hindi learning classes but he could not understand Hindi, for a
person who could understand Hindi and who wrote lot of kritis in Sanskrit in later days, this seem to be a surprise. Hence, Instead of attending Hindi classes, he started attending GYM. (This may be due to god’s will that yogis should have strong physical body so that he redirected him to GYM). In the GYM, he used to accept the bets of his friends for weight lifting and perform the same without much effort. Most of the time, the bets will be several litres of milk and he used to drink those milk also effortless and even digest the same. He also won Mr.Madurai championship in those days for his skills in body building at the age of 17 (1955).
On seeing the physique of Sundararajan, his relative and a famous cine cameraman Mr. W.R. Subbarao wanted to introduce him to Tamil Cinema and put him in the Modern Theatres Production house, a popular cinema production house in Salem in those days. But he got only
few chances to act and never got any lead roles. He also went to Chennai and stayed in his sister’s house as his sister settled in Chennai after her marriage.
Sundararajan inspired to become a great cineactor of his times and he prepared himself towards that by practicing acting, adore luxurious garments and knock the doors of cine opportunities. He also shortened his name from Sundarajan to Madurai. S. Suraj for this.
Divine Intervention through Guru
Sendamangalam is a small town in the foot hills of Kollihills, which is also known as chathuragiri and abode to lot of divine forces and invaluable herbs. Sri Swayamprakasa Avadhootha swamigal, a great avadudha saint lived in sendhamangalam preaching various aspects of sanadhana dharma to the people. Please refer to the site : http:// www.swayamprakasaswmigal.weebly.com to know more about him.
Swami Dattananda
Though Sri Swayamprakasa swamigal had many difficulties in getting sanyasam, after he became guru he conferred deekshas to the competent disciples and helped them to attain mukthi, there are numerous disciples to swayam prakasa swamigal in this aspect and they used to visit sendhamangalam often to get the darshan of Swayamprakasa swamigal. One of such disciple is called ‘Sri Dattanandar’. Dattanandar is an expert in predicting the future and also he had the powers to travel by air (Gagana Marga) without any help, a power achieved through his tapas and blessings of Sri Swayamprakasa swamigal. Some of the people managing the dattatreya temple once wanted to take photograph of all the disciples of Swayamprakasa swamigal, though they could manage to take photographs they could not take a photograph of Dattananda as he did not agree to it. The reason Dattananda gave was that he feel not to leave any traces of him when he move out of the world, a photograph will leave traces of him. Unconvinced by such statements, the people managing the temple organized a photographer to take a photograph discreetly without the knowledge of swami Dattananda when he comes out of the bath from the pond. On the day planned, the photographer also disguised himself behind a bush to take a photograph, when Dattananda came out of the pond, he tried to zoom him and to his surprise, he saw a big snake with a large hood looking at him. Stunned by this, he fell at the feet of Dattananda to pardon his mistake.
People had more respect for Dattananda, they wanted to know who his disciple will be? Swami responded that he has only one sishya and he will go and meet him.
Guru in search of sishya
In a normal world, sishya will search for a good guru, but in our Guru Surajananda case, Guru Dattananda was in search of a good sishya. Since he had the skills of traveling through air without any support and invisible to others, he once spotted Suraj in Chennai who was talking to his friends about the cinema etc He identified that Suraj will be the ideal disciple for him. He also identified through his gnanadrishti that they
had a common friend. Hence he purposefully stayed in that common friend’s place. On the earmarked day, Suraj visited his friends house and was talking to his friend, while leaving his house, Dattananda called Suraj in kannada like “Sundarraja, illi ba” which means ,”come here”. Suraj was stunned because none of his friends know that his mother tongue is kannada and he was surprised to see that a stranger to him called his full name in kannada. Suraj went slowly close to him and that moment should be considered as equivalent to swami Vivekananda meeting Ramakrishna paramahamsa in his first meeting.
Change of Role
A sort of attraction towards spirituality occupied the minds of Suraj on meeting Dattananda and he became the disciple of him. Dattananda taught him various sadhanas and also asked him to chant specific mantras to attain various powers. Suraj became Guru Surajananda and took the upadesas very seriously and followed the instruction of his Guruji. Many a times, he started observing “Mouna Viratham” (vow to observe silence) and continued to chant mantras and due to this he lost his attention over his dressing sense, many a times, he used to be seen in dirty clothes. In 1962, i.e. within 3-4 years from 1958, his dressing style came down to a level of a sanyasi from that of a king like. Once he had to travel on personal emergency to take care of his grandmother and he traveled by train. His guru Dattananda came with him till the
railway station to see him off. That was the last time he met his Guru.
Metamorphosis of attaining saintly attire
Once Sundararajan (Suraj) had a dream wherein some monkeys came and picked out his gold chain and from that day he stopped wearing any type of ornaments. He told others that after the marriage of his sister, his shirts will go away. Similarly, after his sister’s marriage, he had a dream wherein some monkeys tried to remove his shirts as well. In reality, when he opened his wardrobe and took the shirts, but it was torn as if somebody has torned it intentionally. He took another shirt and that was also torn. It was a surprise that new shirts were torn, he felt that it is time for him to get rid of his shirts. From that time, he used to wear only white dhotis (without a border design) and a white angawastra when he goes out and inside the house, he used to wear Red dhoti and angawastra.
Miracles
Guru Surajananda once visited mantralayam and on the way he stayed in a place where he got the darshan of Guru Ragavendra. He also got the darshan of great Mahans like Ragottama swamy (he used to describe that the body of ragottama swamy will literally glitter like Gold) . He also had a darshan of one Mahan called ‘Chandramukhi’ who according to him was 1000 years old.
During his sainthood, he also took care of the dependants which are the unique characteristic of our Mahan guru Surajananda. This he did without compromising on the saintly affairs, thus showing the world about the performance of various sadhakas.
He used to appear in different forms to different people at the same time. For example, he will be visible to a person and for other not visible for a next person standing to him. He used to be seen as a one wearing dhoti to one but for another with phant and shirt. He used to be an ardent devotee of Anjaneya swamy and perform puja regularly. Many devotees have benefitted by his miracles. By the sight of him, many devotees have got rid of their personal problems and have prospered in their lives. He composed various songs and compiled them as ‘Geetha Sangama’. Even now many popular artists sing those songs in various festivals. He served as a beacon light to none other than the mridangam maestro ‘Karaikudi Mani’ and guided him to open various music schools. Even today, an award in the name of ‘Guru Surajananda’ has been instituted by
Karaikudi Mani to encourage the youngsters. (Please visit the link below for reference).

Yogalaya Ashram, Neelankarai
This place was chosen by Sri Guruji wherein he lived for few years before his Samadhi. “Yogalaya Ashram” as a mother’s lap for the weak and trouble. Guruji preached and taught the simple technique of a happy life and also motivate his friends ( he calls all his devotees as friends) to learn the art of Meditation by conducting classes during the week ends. He always preach that no one is superior or inferior to one another. He
would index everybody as “Anbargal” which means good friends.
He preached that mother is the ultimate for every life. He not only preached but also lived so. He would always say I shall be in the material world till my mother’s last breath and so after his mother’s last breath within 50 days he left the material world to eternal world.
In 1992, Guruji’s mother expired and it seems that he felt that his worldly responsibilities are over and he attained Mahasamadhi on 15th September 1992 (Sankata hara chathurthi day). His Samadhi has been designed as the one designed for yogis (in the lines of mother and
aurobindo-pondicherry) and is situated in Neelangarai in a very calm place near the beach.
Swami Santhananda once visited this place and observed that the Samadhi has lot of positive vibrations which indicates that he is a great Mahan.
Sri Guruji rests in all the souls who pray him. He is next to you, when you are in trouble, he will guide you and protect you as a mother does to her children.

Sri Guru Surajananda Gnana Peetam at Kumbakonam
Guru Surajananda Gnana Peetam is located near Kumbakonam at melapadugai Sundaraperumal kovil. Even now, at Gnana Peetam Guruji appears
as Rajarishi and blesses his devotees. This is thus believed, because, when the devotees wanted to set up a temple for him, they were guided by their inner sense to buy a land at this specific place. They later realized that this happened for a cause, as that Sage told.
